Happy Birthday, Dickey Chapelle. One of my heroes. I went to look her up because I reblogged that photo of Gerda Taro, and I’ve always admired women who stepped out of the background to take center stage. The first time I ever heard of Dickey was at an exhibit at the Kodak Museum in Rochester, NY. I was fascinated with her life and horrified at her death. There were many more pictures on display of her death at the museum than what you see in the wikipedia article. When I saw that today would have been her 93rd birthday, I realized I had to post something about her. Dickey, I didn’t know who you were until much too late, but thank you for being the person you were, doing a hard job and bringing the realities of war to us. You were a BAMF of the highest order.
